WHIP! Do You Know How?

**(Hits + Walks) divided by (Innings Pitched)**

WHIP is one of my favorite pitching statistics! It measures the walks and hits per inning pitched. It shows a pitchers effectiveness against hitters and his ability to throw strikes.

Below is an example:

Nolan has pitched 156 innings this year. He has given up 113 hits and 33 base on balls. His W.H.I.P. would be calculated by:

(113 hits + 33 base on balls) divided by (156 innings pitched) = .936

Nolan's W.H.I.P. of .936 says that he doesn't, on average, give up one hit or walk for every inning pitched.
