Baseball Pitching Machines - What to Look For...

"My Pitching Machine Has Helped Produce Confidence For My Kid!"

Baseball pitching machines are a crucial part of a youth baseball organization. Each team needs to have regular access to a machine because most youth baseball coaches are not able to throw consistent strikes to his/her players. Seeing good pitches is a key to developing as a hitter.

As a long-time youth baseball coach and fan, I have witnessed many coaches throwing batting practice to players in which the player actually gets worse... If a coach cannot throw good batting practice, the youth player will start to get anxious and swing at bad pitches. The youth baseball player will develop extremely bad habits and take those habits into games. We don't want that. We want to develop good habits!

By giving youth baseball coaches access to baseball batting machines, the following will happen:

  • Players will get consistent strikes which will allow them to become comfortable in the batters box
  • Good hitting habits will be formed, by muscle memory, because the hitters will be swinging at good pitches on a consistent basis.
  • The team will develop into a better team.
  • The player and coaches will have FUN!

Purchasing a Pitching Machine

Pitching machines come in all types! You have machines with wheels and arms, baseball pitching machines that throw baseball, dimple balls and foam balls.

What kind should you buy?

Well, the answer to that is up to you. Most of them will help your hitters, but your budget might not be big enough to buy one for every setting. Just use common sense when purchasing one. Answer questions such as:

  • Where will I use this machine most? If it is on a baseball field, I would recommend a machine that throws baseballs or dimple balls. It should also be able to throw breaking balls, like curve balls and sliders.

If you are going to be working inside a gym with not batting cage, you will need to look at a wiffle ball machine or a foam ball pitching machine.

  • What is my budget? If you have a higher budget, I would recommend spending it on a high end machine that can do most things for you. If you have a smaller budget, you may have to purchase a non-electric machine that only throws fastballs.
