Wanna Know How Baseballs Are Made?

Do you want to know how baseballs are made for Major League Baseball? They aren't playing around when they make them. Each major league baseball is precisely designed to major league standards.

Since 1872, professional baseball organizations have had rules that govern the size of the baseballs to ensure equity. Due to these strict design standards, baseball manufacturers pay attention to the tiniest of details to make sure each professional baseball is perfect!

Below you will find more specifics on how to make baseballs for the pros. Be sure to watch the video also!

How Baseballs Are Made - Specifications of a Finished Baseball

  • Weight of Baseball - between 5 ounces and 5.25 ounces

How To Make A Baseball - Six Layers Needed!

  1. Pill - The pill of the baseball is the core. The pill is a little smaller than a golf ball and is made up of cork wrapped around with a rubber covering.
  2. 4-Ply Wool - A course 4-ply wool is wrapped around the pill first to make the ball much fatter.
  3. 3-Ply Yarn (heavier) - This yarn gives more substance to the baseball
  4. 3-Ply Yarn (lighter) - Just another layer to add substance to the ball which is much lighter.
  5. Thinner Poly/Wool Blend - This yarn is much smoother and makes up the 2nd to last layer of the baseball.
  6. 2 Pieces of Figure-8 Shaped Leather - These two pieces of leather are sewn together with 108 stitches and makes the outer covering of the baseball.
